Shadows in the Stream

by Robert J. Romano, Jr.

It was in July that Bob Romano contacted me to ask if I would be interested in reviewing his latest book. When a copy of Shadows in the Stream arrive a couple weeks later, I had intended to get to it sooner rather than later. Well, you all know how that goes.

I finally found the opportunity to give the book the read that it deserves, and was regretful that I had not found it sooner. Shadows in the Stream is a wonderful journey through the Rangeley Region of Western Maine, via the eyes of a fly fisherman. Through stories about family, the woods, and of course, fishing, Mr. Romano weaves a series of tales, organized by the different locations in the area that he loves to fish.

To a seasoned angler of this historic region, the names of the chapters will be very familiar. "The Big Magalloway", "The Little Kennebago", "The Rangeley River", "Black Cat Cove". Each chapter eloquently captured the essence of the various locations, and brought me back to my memories of exploring the wilderness and history of each.

To the unseasoned, this book provides an entertaining guide to what awaits you in this wonderful corner of Maine. You'll certainly enjoy the vivid descriptions of locations you'll soon wish to find yourself upon, following in the author's footsteps. Perhaps you'll find a clue or two of where to look and what to expect.

If you enjoy the juxtaposition of life and fly-fishing, and the connection to their beautiful environs, this is another wonderful book for your collection of Gierach's, Babb's and Scott's. I thoroughly enjoyed this read, and suggest you pick up a copy today, and begin your fantastic journey via the recounting of one man.s treasure found here, amongst the stream's shadows.

Romano's book, Shadows in the Stream, contains the author's reflections on lake, pond, river and streams in western Maine. 100 hardcover, numbered, signed limited edition are available for advance order at $35.00. Soft cover: $20.00. All books can be obtained through Birchbrook Press or by calling (607) 746 7453. For more information contact Bob Romano via email.
